Area Festivals 2005

Sussex Area Festival 2005

About the Areas - The Area Festival is the first step up to representative cricket for young players. Sussex is split into four areas - South, West, North and East - for winter coaching and a spring tournament, in which Henfield players represent the Southern Sabres. All players who make the festival have a chance to be selected for Sussex in their age groups.

How to play - The standard at area level is very high. Players are firstly identified and nominated by their club coaches for trials towards the end of each season. Those selected then attend a ten week winter coaching programme at the County Ground indoor school in Hove with some of the best county coaches before a final selection for the festival.

2005 - Four Henfield players were nominated for 2005, of whom Craig Scott (-15) and William Harrison (-12) were selected. Neither made the county squads, but both performed very well with hard work and determination and were a credit to themselves and to the Club - see Results below. Both Steve Mundy and Will Culver performed well at the trials, and we hope they will continue to work hard at their game.

In addition, Craig was named player of the season for the u15s, which was richly deserved as his influence on all three matches was significant with bat and ball.

Sunday 15th May - Sussex Area Festival
Southern Sabres u15 (177-9) lost to Eastern Eagles u15 (180-7) by 3 wickets

For the second week running the Sabres lost out in a game of fluctuating fortunes at Worth School. With 10 overs to go and a required run-rate of over 6 a win looked very possible, but a strong last stand took the game away. Henfield's Craig Scott top scored for the Sabres with 37, accelerating the scoring with Portslade's Alex Smith from 88-5 from 35 overs to a defendable total of 177 from 45 with some trademark big hitting. Craig took 1-28 in the reply, despite not bowling his best, and finished with a tournament batting average of 57.

Sunday 8th May - Sussex Area Festival
Southern Sabres u15 (162 ao) lost to Western Warriors u15 (170) by 8 runs

Another close game, this time batting second at Cuckfield, which again saw Henfield's Craig Scott involved at the death. Last man in with 35 needed off 3 overs, Craig blitzed 20 off 12 balls with two huge sixes to leave 9 needed off the final over. The other batsman then got out to the first ball trying to give Craig the strike.

Sunday 1st May - Sussex Area Festival
Southern Sabres u15 (133-9) bt Northern Knights u15 (132-8) by 1 run

Henfield's Craig Scott finished with 6-0-16-1, including bowling a tight last over to ensure a win for the Southern Sabres at Horsham. This was a low-scoring but exciting game that went to the wire. With eight needed off the last over, the batsmen succeeded in running several single byes to the keeper and had a run discounted for the non-striker running before the delivery. Craig kept his nerve with 2 needed off the last ball, beating the bat for the keeper to complete a run out.
