On behalf of myself and all the members at Arundel CC I would like to offer our very deepest condolences to everyone at Henfield CC following the very tragic and sudden loss of Mark Smith following our game together last Saturday.
If there is anything we can do for the club and especially the family of Mark please do not hesitate to ask.

Terrible news about Smithy. For me he epitomised all that is good about local village cricket in Sussex. He played hard but fair on the field, he had the club at heart, and he enjoyed the social side of the game with team mates and opposition alike. A sad loss to all who came into contact with him.

Everyone at Lewes Priory was very shocked to hear the sad news from Henfield on saturday. I would be most grateful if you would pass on our condolences to Mark's family and friends.

Only one week ago one of our young players had to be brought back to life as a result of being hit below the heart during a match at Bexhill.

No doubt Henfield will be organising some events in memory of Mark and I would be grateful if you would keep us all informed.

We look forward to seeing you in September.

Regards

Nigel

I had only known Mark for the last two years at Henfield cricket club, he came across as a true gentleman of cricket, playing the game he so clearly loved.
He always had an encouraging word for George & Harry which ment a lot to them both, he was a perfect role model for them to look up to.
God bless to all the family.

Colin

Mark always gave his best, played with great skill and gave support to others, a good friend and great team mate. A pleasure to have played along side him for his 19 years with the club.

I couldn't believe the news coming back from Henfield on Saturday. I played against Mark over many years and he always gave 110 per cent and sometimes we would get very competitive in the heat of a match but we would always have a right laugh in the bar afterwards. He was a top bloke and my heartfelt sympathy and condolences go out to his family and all at Henfield cc.

Incredible to think it was 35 years ago
since I played at this wonderful ,historic club.....in the NSCA
in Sydney, the oldest club is 91 years.
Northbridge almost folded a few years ago - they now have 5 teams.

i have a fading picture on my wall in my study of a cricket match - i have just noticed the name Henfield CC and googled it - leading to your site with all its glorious history. Unfortunately we have a mere 25 years to our name - i'll get back to you in another 250 years when we'll be only half your age!

Henfield CC Replies: Thank you for taking the time to look us up, Peter! If you're ever in the area please do call in and say hello.

In the 60s, 70s and 80s, as skipper, I brought a wandering side to Henfield as a Sunday First XI fixture. We were Boston Ramblers and I recall a club photo adorning your Clubhouse wall depicting the two teams, circa 1980.
I stumbled across your excellent website by chance and thought you may like to know how much we enjoyed our games against you and appreciated the hospitality shown to us over many seasons. Alas with the advent of League cricket there was little room for Wandering sides and Boston Ramblers finally called it a day many years ago.A prominent member of our side in those days was Tony Biggs, ex Arsenal 1950s, who now lives near Eastbourne.
We still keep in touch and a nice day out for us in the coming season would be to drive out to Henfield with our wives to watch a first team game - you never know there may be somebody old enough to remember us. Might even be able to persuade one or two of the other ex players to come along. Could I ask you to send me a fixture card for the coming season and we can select a date - hope it's not too much trouble. In those days it was a club rule that no-one left our hosts' bar before 11 o'clock unless he had a very good reason. It cemented many a fixture and we may be remembered for that reason alone.
Best wishes for the season

Henfield CC Replies: Peter,

Many thanks for your entry on the Guestbook. Please do come and visit us, we'd be delighted to see you. I have removed your name and address from your posting simply because it is probably best to keep that information out of the public domain, but if any club member would like to get in touch, it has been saved offsite.
