Fund raising Coffee Morning - I thought you would all like to know that the money raised at the Coffee Morning was a whopping £406.83, certainly a record in my time as Treasurer. That should pay for a few new mowers!!Thanks to those people who helped on the day.

Henfield Cricket Tour 2007 - Eighteen weary souls have returned from the New Forest after the first Henfield cricket tour in many years. To read Richard Dale's tour report please click here

Baby Slaughts arrives! - The club would like to offer its sincere congratulations to Robbie and Alex on the birth of their daughter, Rosie Caitlin

Geoff Crowther - It is with sadness that we have to announce the death of Geoff Crowther during the night of Saturday 11th August.

Geoff's cricket career for Henfield started as a colt in 1951 and progressed to the senior side, where he played between 1956 -1963 and again between 1988 and 1992. He made two hundred's for the club, one against B.B.C. Bushman in 1957 and the other against Broadbridge Heath in 1991 and scored a total of 16 fifties. His best bowling performance was 6-24 against Shoreham in 1958 and he took 5 wickets in an innings on five occasions.

Geoff was a solid opening batsman, scoring over 5,000 runs for the club and he finished top of the averages in 1957; he was also a very useful change bowler taking over 100 wickets and was part of the team that won the Horsham six-a-side in 1963.

He was a great all round sportsman and played professional football as a full back for Portsmouth F. C. in the sixties and after that for Horsham F.C.

Geoff was involved in a funny incident when he was captain of the juniors in 1953. Henfield were playing Lindfield on the common, for some reason no senior member was present at the start of the game, so Geoff decided to use the middle pitch that was marked out. After about half an hour of play, Frank Maystone arrived in 'one hell of a flap' rushed onto the ground and made Geoff move the game to the wicket at the top of the square, as we were using the wicket that he had lovingly prepared since early April and which was earmarked for the Sussex Club and Ground match that week-end. Geoff was not the most popular person with Frank at that time!

Our deepest sympathies go to his family.
Conway Thorns, Chairman

SCB Coach Courses 2007-8 - The dates for next winter's ECB Coach training programme in Sussex have now been published. As part of our development plans at Henfield we are very keen to encourage more players to qualify as coaches for several reasons:

  • We are very close to the minimum number of coaches required to run our colts' section: at least two per age group is a necessity, and more enables us to do one to one work and smaller group sessions. The under 16s especially would benefit hugely from experienced players working with them.
  • There will be greater expertise available in-house for all players at all levels to develop.
  • This is likely to become more pressing as we establish ourselves in the County League system.
  • All players qualifying as coaches will improve their own knowledge and their own game, no exceptions.

In return for your commitment to the course and to developing cricket at Henfield for a period, the club is prepared to meet the costs of your gaining a qualification that is yours, for your CV. If you wish to apply for any of the courses, please drop me an email or call me and I will explain more about what is involved and help you choose the correct level.

New history page launched, detailing the Timeline of Henfield Cricket Club's development.

Sussex Cricket League 2008 - The club has now received its formal invitation to join the expanded Sussex Cricket League in Division Three West from the start of the 2008 season. In accordance with the membership's wishes, as voted for at the EGM, the club has accepted this invitation. Briefing documents here

3rd XI - The club committee has decided to make an attempt to launch a 3rd XI with the intention of arranging initial fixtures on Sundays 1st & 15th July 2007. Given the high level of availability in recent weeks, and the ever increasing numbers of players being attracted to the club, it is felt that this may be a viable option. Should there be sufficient demand, we would look to arrange further fixtures through the season, and if the experiment is successful, we would look to include a 3rd team as a permanent part of the cricket club. To that end, can all players, whether senior or colt, please fill in the availability book, in the pavilion, both on those dates and further ahead, as a matter of urgency. To discuss the creation of the 3rd XI on the club's messageboard click here.

Golf Day - The club's Golf Day was recently held at East Brighton. For the report, click here.

EGM - Please note, the EGM this Friday concerning the future plans for County League cricket will now take place at the White Hart, not the pavilion as previously planned.

Treasure Hunt On the Common from 6pm on Friday 22nd June

Darts Night - The first Henfield Cricket Club Darts Championship has taken place. For a full report, click here.

Retirements - At the start of the 2007 season, four players have announced that they have retired from playing cricket: Keith Waldron has played for the club since 1957, and is without doubt one of the finest wicketkeepers in the club's long history. Nick Blake is statistically the club's greatest ever wicketkeeper-batsman, and it remains possible that his back will recover sufficiently to allow him to play again. Pete Smith has been forced to retire because of a serious knee complaint, whilst Paul Vedamuttu has had to retire prematurely due to his ongoing back problems. We wish them all well, and as they have not retired from the club, just from playing, we look forward to seeing them across the season.

This will be redesigned over the winter to make it a bit slicker, but if you have any pictures that are worthy of inclusion (and the webmaster DOES reserve editorial rights ...!) then please for details of how to format and send them over.

Cricket Tour - We have now received 17 deposits for hotel rooms from players wishing to join us on the tour of the New Forest in August. At the time of writing, we have booked rooms for 18 people, and so are getting close to our original limit. We are able to increase the allocation with the hotel, but we will need to know for certain that players intend to come, so if you do wish to attend, we need to know sooner rather than later, as we may not be able to obtain additional rooms later in the year.

Henfield Cricket Tour proposal 2007 - Update

We've had a few responses so far, but nothing like the number of people who we know to visit this site. If you don't tell us, then it won't go ahead due to lack of interest. We're keeping a log of those who do reply so we can better assess in the coming months. Please take a moment to let us know either way - we can't guess what everyone thinks about it. Many thanks to those who have replied so far. To advise your level of interest, please
